Job Summary

Aptive seeks a Biomedical Technician / Equipment Support Specialist – Information Systems to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under the Biomedical Engineering Technical Professional Support Services (BETPSS) program. The role supports the operation, sustainment, integration, and troubleshooting of clinical information systems and networked medical technologies used across VA medical centers.

 

The selected candidate will provide technical support for clinical information systems and device integrations including systems such as MUSE Cardiology Information System, Intensive Care Unit Clinical Information Systems (ICUCIS), Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), and other networkconnected diagnostic and therapeutic platforms. The specialist will ensure these systems operate reliably, securely, and in compliance with VA biomedical engineering and cybersecurity requirements.

 

Responsibilities include installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of medical equipment and information systems; supporting system interfaces between medical devices and hospital IT infrastructure; assisting with cybersecurity vulnerability remediation; maintaining accurate device inventory and configuration documentation; and supporting lifecycle sustainment activities for networked medical technologies.

 

The role requires close coordination with VA Biomedical Engineering staff, clinical personnel, IT operations, and cybersecurity teams to ensure medical systems supporting patient care remain secure, compliant, and fully operational.

 

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for clinical information systems including MUSE, ICUCIS, PACS, and other deviceintegrated healthcare platforms.
  • Install, configure, test, and maintain networked medical equipment and associated information systems in accordance with VA and manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot system connectivity, interface, and data integration issues involving HL7, DICOM, TCP/IP networking, and related protocols.
  • Support system upgrades, patches, vulnerability mitigation, and cybersecurity compliance activities for medical devices and associated servers.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate medical equipment inventories and configuration data within VA asset management systems.
  • Collaborate with biomedical engineering and IT staff to support system integration between medical devices and hospital networks.
  • Support preventative maintenance, performance verification, and operational testing of deviceintegrated information systems.
  • Document maintenance actions, system configurations, and troubleshooting activities in accordance with VA policies and BETPSS program requirements.
  • Assist with system lifecycle activities including installation, replacement, upgrade planning, and decommissioning of clinical systems.
  • Provide technical support and training assistance to clinical and biomedical staff on system operation and troubleshooting.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Education Requirement:
    • Associates or higher degree in the biomedical technology or biomedical engineering field; OR
    • Associates or higher degree in electronics, a field of information technology, or engineering (other than biomedical engineering) AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
    • Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program; OR
    • Completion of a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
    • Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; OR
    • Completion of biomedical engineering technician or HTM certificate program that did not include an internship AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
    • Hold or having ever held certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM). Continuous maintenance of certification is not required throughout contract
  • A minimum of three years of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance, with a minimum of one-year specialized experience in medical information systems and networking.
  • Current and advanced knowledge of computer virus protection software, available software patches and upgrades, information security tools, electronics, computers, and network theory.
  • Demonstrated competency in utilizing and maintaining computer and server-based medical equipment, medical record databases, and proprietary and generic software; experience with TCP/IP, HL7, networking, network security and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards; experience maintaining, interfacing and troubleshooting networked medical equipment to include VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, and network security; ability to interpret, identify and apply network engineering principles and practices; and ability to distinguish networking problems from non-networking problems.
  • Understanding of regulatory agencies’ requirements, industry regulatory requirements and International Standard Organization standards.
  • Familiarity with the setup and application of network test equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical literature, schematics, and drawings.
