The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented senior system administrator to provide secure and reliable server support as part of the Managed Applications Server Support Team. In this role, you will plan, lead, and manage the delivery of Enterprise Management Application Services infrastructure, enterprise applications, supporting website server operations, and hybrid COTS solutions across multiple agency business units, including Finance and Administrative Services, Mega Programs, Urban Mobility and Access, Multimodal Development and Delivery, the Office of the Secretary, and Washington State Ferries. Key responsibilities include administering enterprise content management, document capture, IT service and asset management, geographic information systems, environmental data management, and ETL tools, and supporting Internet Information Services (IIS), configuring load balancing, application acceleration, SSL offloading, web application firewalls, as well as coordinating vulnerability management and remediation efforts. A strong candidate will demonstrate expertise in enterprise server administration, infrastructure security, technical problem-solving, and collaboration across diverse teams.


What to Expect

Infrastructure Services serves as WSDOT’s enterprise support organization, providing technical support, management, and strategic leadership for servers, storage, Active Directory, Azure cloud administration, infrastructure-as-a-service, networking, telecommunications, fiber optics, and mainframe technologies. The team supports all WSDOT employees, maintains over 230 statewide sites, and collaborates with internal partners, inter-agency stakeholders, and vendors. Enterprise Server Support delivers leadership and technical oversight for application and service hosting, identity and access management, messaging, video conferencing, content delivery, backup and recovery, and both on-premises and cloud infrastructure. 


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Business Systems Infrastructure Specialist will:

  • Design, configure and maintain the multiple-server environments for these highly complex computing systems used by personnel agency-wide and external partners.
  • Oversee the daily operations of enterprise server systems.
  • Perform software installation and configuration.
  • Use advanced hardware and software diagnostic tools (e.g., Procmon, ProcessExplorer, Wireshark) to identify and independently resolve very complex system problems.
  • Use server application management tools (e.g., Apache Tomcat Manager, SQL Server Management Studio, Internet Information Services (IIS), WebLogic Server Admin Console, RSAT) to configure software settings and troubleshoot application performance. 
  • Coordinate with other IT Disciplines to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve reported and complex server issues.
  • Securely maintain assigned virtual and physical servers.
  • Promote, support, and directly participate in WSDOT's cybersecurity program through strict adherence to all relevant policies, practicing good cybersecurity hygiene, and following security best practices.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Enterprise Server Infrastructure Coordination: Demonstrated expertise in coordinating enterprise-level server infrastructure operations, ensuring high availability, performance optimization, and compliance with security and scalability standards across complex IT environments.
  • Enterprise and Cloud Infrastructure Management: Comprehensive working knowledge of enterprise server and cloud infrastructure, including patch compliance, vulnerability management, server security, Windows firewall configuration, virtualization platforms, data storage and backup solutions, cloud computing (IaaS/PaaS), monitoring tools, and PowerShell scripting, enabling secure, resilient, and scalable IT operations.
  • IIS Management: Proficient in managing IIS, with hands-on experience coordinating the installation, support, and troubleshooting of enterprise web application infrastructure to ensure reliability, security, and performance.
  • IIS Configuration and Troubleshooting: Working knowledge of Microsoft IIS, with the ability to configure, manage, and troubleshoot web server environments to support secure, scalable, and high-performing enterprise applications.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Advanced IT Expertise and Leadership: Demonstrated advanced IT expertise and leadership by independently coordinating and delivering technology solutions that meet evolving business needs and support IT mission objectives. Typically obtained by professional experience or a degree focused on systems administration, IT architecture, or a related computer science discipline.
  • Microsoft Windows Server Administration: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, with proven ability to administer, configure, and maintain server environments to support secure, scalable, and high-performing enterprise infrastructure.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Knowledge: Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Networking Fundamentals: Working knowledge of networking, including TCP/IP protocols and domain naming services (DNS).
  • Project Management and Technology Implementation: Experience with project management principles and successfully leading project teams through migration and/or technology implementation projects.


Important Notes 

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.   
  • This position is required to be on stand-by status on a rotating schedule and provide after-hours support. Incumbent must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to occasionally respond to critical lT-related systems and networks issues. 
  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
