The Senior Systems Engineer is a technical leader responsible for the design, architecture, and optimization of both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure. This pivotal role drives the modernization, reliability, and security of our systems across platforms like Azure and AWS.
The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with a strategic mindset, capable of working independently while also collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
This position requires deep technical expertise and a focus on operational excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement through automation. You'll have operational ownership of critical systems, including Computing Facilities, Servers, Storage, IaaS, and Application Delivery Platforms, and will work very closely with the network team, leveraging your knowledge of Cisco Catalyst, Nexus, Meraki, Cisco VPN, ISE and Firewall technologies to ensure a robust and secure infrastructure.
Core Responsibilities
· System Design & Implementation: Architect and implement solutions for our cloud and on-premises infrastructure, focusing on IaaS, storage, and application delivery. Lead the design and deployment of new services on Azure and on-premises .
· Infrastructure Automation: Develop and implement automation strategies using Python, PowerShell, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to streamline system configuration, provisioning, and decommissioning.
· Cloud and Hybrid Architecture: Engineer and manage our hybrid cloud environment, ensuring seamless integration and data synchronization between our on-premises data centers and Azure and AWS.
· Platform Expertise: Lead the management and optimization of our core platforms, including:
· Virtualization: VMware (ESX), Citrix XenServer
· Storage: Pure Storage, Cisco SAN, Windows File Server, and cloud-native storage like Azure Blobs and AWS S3.
· Cloud Services: Design and maintain Azure and AWS infrastructure (networking, compute, storage, and security).
· Identity & Access: Manage and architect Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID synchronization.
· Application Delivery: Architect and support Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop and Azure Application Proxy.
· Data Protection: Implement and manage disaster recovery, backup, and restore solutions using Veeam, Azure Backup, and AWS Backup.
· Security & Compliance: Design and enforce security policies and controls, including Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance. Implement and manage data encryption platforms like Thales CipherTrust.
· Monitoring & Optimization: Proactively monitor system health and performance using tools like SolarWinds, NinjaOne and Azure Monitor. Use AIOps principles to identify and resolve potential issues before they impact the business.
· Technical Leadership: Mentor junior team members, provide technical guidance to diverse teams, and lead technical relationships with external vendors and consultants.
· Documentation: Create and maintain detailed design documents, policies, and procedures for all infrastructure services.
Daily Support & Maintenance
· Storage Platforms and protocols (Pure, Cisco SAN, Windows File Server, DFS, CIFS, SMB, NFS, SFTP, Block Replication, Deduplication, Storage Migration, Data Encryption, Azure Blobs, AWS S3)
· Server Platforms (ESX, VMware, Citrix XenServer, Windows Server, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Azure and AWS)
· IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) is hosted in Azure our most used cloud platform
· Backup & Restore Services (Veeam, Windows Server Backup, Azure Backup, AWS Backup)
· Data Encryption (Thales CipherTrust Data Security Platform)
· Authentication (Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure AD Connect)
· Application & Desktop Delivery (Azure Proxy, Citrix XenDesktop & XenApp)
· Server Patching and Management (SCCM, Ninja One, ESX, XenServer, UCS Firmware, vSphere)
· Server and Network Monitoring (SCOM, SolarWinds, Data Center Infrastruxure, APC NetBotz, Server Tech PDU)
· Disaster Recovery (Site Recovery Manager, Active Directory Authoritative Restore and object level restore, Veeam, AWS, Azure and Office 365
· DNS, DHCP, IPAM, Domain Name Registration, Network Load Balancers
· Detailed design documentation and policies or procedures that are applicable to the infrastructure services you support.
Job Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
· 7+ years of hands-on experience in a senior systems role with a focus on cloud infrastructure, automation, and system design.
· Expertise in Microsoft Azure is essential, with Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or equivalent experience.
· Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python or PowerShell is required.
· Experience with on-premises infrastructure, including VMware, Citrix, and Cisco UCS.
· Strong knowledge of core networking concepts, including LAN/WAN/SD-WAN (Cisco Meraki),
VPN (Cisco, MS Direct Access), and firewall technologies.
· Demonstrated experience with backup and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., Veeam, Azure Site Recovery Manager).
· Solid understanding of IT security principles, data encryption, and SOX compliance.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to various audiences.
· Ability to balance daily operational tasks with long-term project work.
Preferred Skills
Azure Infrastructure Expertise (IaaS & PaaS)
Certified Azure Administrator with proven experience designing, building, and operating infrastructure on Microsoft Azure, including Azure Blobs, Managed Disks, Express Route, Azure Local, Azure Backup, Platform Landing Zones, etc.
Strong command of Azure AD Connect, Azure Proxy, and Azure-based disaster recovery tools like Site Recovery Manager.
Core Networking & Security
Deep knowledge of Core Networking (Cisco), LAN/WAN/SD-WAN (Cisco Meraki), VPN (Cisco, MS Direct Access), and Firewall technologies (Cisco, AWS, Windows).
Familiarity with network monitoring tools like SolarWinds, SCOM, and Data Center Infrastruxure.
Cloud & Hybrid Systems Integration
Hands-on experience with hybrid cloud environments, integrating on-premises systems with Azure and AWS.
Skilled in authentication and identity management using Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, and Azure AD.
Certifications & Technical Leadership
Preferred certifications from Microsoft (Azure), VMware, Cisco, AWS, and others.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, mentor peers, and manage vendor relationships.
Automation, Monitoring & Compliance
Experience automating operational checks and maintaining centralized status dashboards.
Strong understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, data encryption (Thales CipherTrust), and backup/restore strategies using Veeam and Azure-native tools. Office 365 backup and DR.
