JOB SUMMARY:
Genesis Consulting is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking SQL Database Administrator / Engineer to provide operational support and technical expertise for a State Agency Legacy System during a modernization and transition planning initiative. This role is responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, security, and reliability of existing database environments while supporting current-state assessments and contributing technical input toward future-state planning and Request for Proposal (RFP) development. The SQL DBA / Engineer will work closely with project managers, technical leads, and business stakeholders to document database architectures, data dependencies, and operational processes in support of system replacement or modernization efforts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide day-to-day operational support for mission-critical SQL database environments supporting state agency legacy systems.
· Monitor database health, performance, availability, and capacity.
· Perform routine maintenance, patching, backups, restores, and disaster recovery support.
· Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in coordination with application and infrastructure teams.
· Ensure database environments meet established service levels and operational requirements.
· Support current-state assessments by documenting existing database architectures, configurations, and data flows.
· Inventory databases, schemas, jobs, integrations, and dependencies across legacy systems.
· Identify technical debt, performance constraints, risks, and operational challenges within the database environment.
· Provide subject matter expertise related to legacy system data structures and usage patterns.
· Contribute database-related input to modernization planning and future-state discussions.
· Support analysis of database migration, modernization, or replacement options.
· Assist in defining database-related technical requirements, assumptions, and constraints for future-state solutions.
· Provide operational insights to ensure future designs are supportable, secure, and maintainable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
· 7+ years of experience as a SQL Database Administrator or Database Engineer supporting enterprise systems.
· Strong experience supporting relational database environments in production, including:
o Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle relational databases.
· Demonstrated experience supporting legacy application environments and mission-critical systems.
· Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills.
· Experience documenting database environments and operational processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience supporting State or local government systems or other public-sector environments.
· Familiarity with legacy technologies and applications (e.g., C++, VB6, COBOL, .NET) and their database dependencies.
· Experience supporting system modernization, migration, or replacement initiatives.
· Knowledge of security, compliance, backup, and disaster recovery requirements for government systems.
· Experience supporting procurement or RFP-related documentation.
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
