Job Description

For years, field service has relied on experience and instinct to keep the world running—but as teams shrink, equipment evolves, and expectations rise, instinct alone isn’t enough. That’s where XOi comes in. As the data intelligence solution built for those who design, maintain, and depend on critical equipment, we turn asset data into uptime—empowering every stakeholder with the visibility and foresight to move from reactive work to proactive planning and predictive maintenance. With unmatched transparency across every stage of the asset lifecycle, XOi delivers the right information to the right person at the right time—because when assets perform at their best, so does everything around them.

XOi is expanding our Data Platform team with a Senior Postgres Database Administrator who will own the performance, integrity, security, and architecture of our data platforms. You will set database strategy and standards, partner closely with product and application engineers, and act as the liaison between Engineering (OLTP/operational systems) and Data/Analytics (Snowflake/OLAP). Your work will directly shape developer experience, application performance, and the reliability and cost-effectiveness of our data infrastructure supporting a ~5,000+ TPS event-driven architecture.

How our teams collaborate

You’ll work day‑to‑day with software engineers, data engineers, and platform engineers, leading design reviews for schema and query changes, teaching best practices, and continuously improving our data platform. Personality and culture fit matters—a calm, curious problem‑solver who can recommend pragmatic approaches, translate trade‑offs, and elevate the whole team.

Why this role matters

  • Ensure our transactional Postgres systems deliver low-latency, high-throughput experiences for customers and developers.

  • Provide clear design boundaries and pipelines between application databases (OLTP) and reporting/analytical workloads (OLAP) to keep each fast and reliable.

  • Reduce friction for developers through safe, predictable schema change processes, excellent observability, and clear standards.

What you will own

Partner to Engineering & Developer Experience

  • Serve as a trusted partner to application teams helping to translate product and feature needs into resilient data designs.

  • Design safe-migration patterns (back/forward compatible; avoid long locks), establish review SLAs, templates, and linters to keep PRs fast and predictable.

  • Coach engineers on query design, index selection and data modeling for high‑performance applications.

  • Document and socialize OLTP vs. OLAP boundaries.

Database Operations & Performance (PostgreSQL)

  • Implement comprehensive monitoring/alerting

  • Drive query and schema tuning to maintain sub‑second p95 and healthy p99s at peak.

  • Optimize the sizing and operating parameters of the database for maximum efficiency and speed.

  • Establish and apply partitioning strategy to balance write throughput, maintenance, and query performance.

  • Own index lifecycle with guardrails to avoid write amplification and lock contention.

Reliability, HA/DR & Incident Leadership

  • Lead the DB on‑call rotation; act as incident commander for Sev1/Sev2; run blameless post‑mortems with actionable follow‑ups.

  • Architect and test HA/DR; define and meet RTO/RPO; maintain runbooks; conduct quarterly DR tests.

  • Own SLOs for latency, error rate, and availability; implement safeguards for long transactions, hot partitions, and lock storms.

Architecture & Standards Enforcement

  • Schema Design Authority: review and approve DB schema changes through PRs; collaborate with Engineers to refactor changes when potential issues are identified; prevent anti‑patterns (e.g., over‑normalized hot paths, unbounded transactions, cross‑service coupling).

  • Enforce consistent naming conventions, indexing strategies, and relational patterns; author ADRs and living standards.

  • Work closely with Engineering team to establish standards for database tooling strategy

Development Process & Change Management

  • Gate database code via Git‑based PR reviews; implement quality gates (SQLFluff, CI checks, static analysis); promote rollout patterns (blue/green, canary, backfills).

  • Ensure environment parity and safe deployments (avoid mixing versioned/repeatable migrations; data migrations that scale; zero/near‑zero downtime changes).

Analytical Data Flow & Performance

  • Maintain clean data contracts and pipelines between OLTP and Snowflake; ensure workload isolation and minimal impact to primaries.

  • Leverage Snowflake for data integration from multiple sources and ensuring consumers of the data have performant queries and views.

Stakeholder Communication & Culture

  • Act as the liaison between Engineering and Data—align priorities, clarify trade‑offs, and communicate impact to Product and Executive stakeholders.

  • Elevate team capability via training, brown‑bags, and accessible documentation; model calm, diplomatic leadership in high‑pressure moments.

Qualifications (What you’ve done)

  • 5–8+ years production PostgreSQL DBA experience at scale, including:

    • Advanced execution plan analysis; SQL tuning; lock/transaction troubleshooting.

    • Index strategy and maintenance (B‑tree/partial/functional/covering; GIN/GiST when appropriate).

    • Partitioning design and operations (and when not to partition).

    • Connection pooling (pgBouncer), replication (physical/logical), and HA.

    • Security and access control management; audit and compliance awareness.

  • Strong understanding of application development and how DB design impacts developer experience (safe migrations, backward compatibility, feature‑flagged rollouts, testability).

  • Proven data modeling skills for high‑throughput systems (OLTP) and familiarity with analytical modeling concerns (OLAP) without polluting operational workloads.

  • Monitoring/Observability: Comfortable building actionable alerts and dashboards (e.g., Datadog/Prometheus/Grafana) and debugging via pg_stat*.

  • CI/CD & Migrations: Git‑based workflows; Flyway (in use); quality gates (SQLFluff or similar).

  • Cloud & Messaging: Practical AWS (RDS/Aurora or self‑managed EC2), Lambdas, Kinesis, SNS/SQS.

  • Snowflake: Experience with warehouse sizing, workload management, performance tuning, and cost optimization—or equivalent modern warehouse experience.

  • Soft skills/culture: Empathetic partner, clear communicator to technical and non‑technical audiences, able to build consensus while maintaining technical standards.

Bonus Points

  • Multi‑tenant SaaS data patterns; micro-services data architecture (per‑service DBs; CDC; outbox pattern).

  • Event‑driven high‑throughput systems; workload isolation via read replicas/CDC for reporting.

  • Experience formalizing data contracts, lineage, and governance.

XOi Benefits

  • XOi offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and health, with eligibility the 1st of the next month following your date of hire

  • XOi offers a 401(k), with eligibility at 90 days

  • XOi offers Discretionary Time Off
